
Making Sure Your Bathroom Heater Actually Lasts
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, constant humidity, and wild temperature swings. It’s basically a recipe for short circuits and rusty parts. We build our infrared heaters to IP55 standards to keep the dust and splashes out. But here’s the thing—a rating on a piece of paper doesn’t mean the heater will actually survive five years in a real home.
Why we “age” our heaters
We don’t just turn a unit on and call it a day. Instead, we put every batch through what we call damp-heat aging tests. Think of it as a time machine. We blast the units with heat and humidity for weeks to simulate years of steam exposure. We’re basically trying to break them. If a seal is a tiny bit loose or a solder joint is weak, the moisture will find it. Every time. We’re looking for any drop in insulation or a break in the electrical flow. If it doesn’t hold up, it’s out. I’d much rather burn out a lamp in my own lab than have a customer deal with a dead heater in their ceiling.
The reality of IP55 hardware
IP55 is great for stopping dust and low-pressure water jets. To make that happen, we use specific gaskets and coat the internal circuits so they don’t oxidize. But there’s a catch. Our shortwave infrared elements get hot—really hot—to give you that instant warmth. This creates a “breathing” effect. The heater goes from freezing to 200°C and back again, causing the seals to expand and contract. That movement can actually suck moist air right into the chassis. That’s why those aging tests are so important. We need to know those seals stay tight even after thousands of these heat cycles.
A few tips for the install
If you’re the one wiring these in, please make sure your grounding is rock solid. Even with all our protection, a leak in the mains wiring can bypass the internal safety features. Also, these units pack a lot of heat into a small space. Double-check that your circuit breakers can handle the peak wattage. You don’t want to be dealing with nuisance tripping on the coldest morning of the year.
