Let’s be honest: those old-school bathroom heat lamps are kind of a gamble. Most of them use basic bulbs that aren’t actually meant to live in a cloud of steam. They just aren’t built for the constant humidity and direct splashes of a real shower. That’s why we’re moving toward Waterproof infrared systems. They just make more sense. The secret is in how they heat. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you. But air is slippery—it moves, it cools down, and it disappears. Infrared is different. It sends out waves of heat that hit your skin and the floor directly. It feels like standing in a patch of sunlight on a cold day. To keep this safe in a wet room, the heating elements are tucked away in sealed quartz or ceramic tubes. We call this an IP rating (usually IPX4 or better), but in plain English, it just means the water stays out. We also use heavy-duty gaskets and seals at the connection points. Why? Because water vapor is sneaky. If it creeps into the electrical terminals, you’re looking at a short circuit or a burnt-out filament. Nobody wants that. Building something that actually lasts We stopped using open-air elements a long time ago. Instead, we use housings made from anodized aluminum or high-grade stainless steel. It keeps the unit from rusting into a mess when the room gets steamy. One thing to keep in mind: wattage. Infrared tubes get hot fast. Really fast. But that puts a bigger load on your electrical circuit. If you’re swapping these into an old bathroom, just double-check that your wiring can handle the extra amperage. You don’t want to be tripping your breakers every time you want a warm shower. You’ll need to leave a bit of breathing room between the heater and your ceiling so things don’t overheat. Also, remember that this heat is directional. It doesn’t fill the whole room; it beams down.
