Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. But if you just slap the biggest heater you can find into the ceiling, you’re going to end up wasting power—or worse, feeling like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet. Here is the trick: infrared isn’t like a space heater. It doesn’t warm up the air; it warms up you. Because of that, the square footage of your room is what really matters. Getting the wattage right If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room, a 400W to 600W unit usually does the trick. Simple. But for those big master baths? You’ve got options. You can go with one beefy unit, or—my recommendation—spread out a few smaller ones. Aim for about 60W to 100W per square meter if you just want to keep the chill away. If you want that “instant cozy” feeling the second you step out of the shower, you’ll need to bump those numbers up. The “Hot Spot” problem More power isn’t always better. Sure, a 1000W unit heats things up fast. But it creates a concentrated beam of heat. If your ceilings are low, that’s not a cozy glow—it’s a sting. It gets uncomfortable quickly. If you’re worried about that, just drop the wattage and add another fixture. It spreads the warmth around so it feels natural, not aggressive. A few things to watch during install Before you close up the ceiling, double-check your wiring. Those halogen or quartz elements pull a lot of current, so make sure your breakers can actually handle the load. And please, give the fixture some breathing room. Leave about a 50mm gap around the housing. If you jam it tight against drywall or plastic trim, things can get scorched. Not a great look. One last tip: keep an eye on your voltage. If you’re working in an old house with tired wiring, you might see a voltage drop. It’s frustrating, but it means your “600W” lamp might actually be performing like a 500W one. Just something to keep in mind if the room feels a bit cooler than you expected.
