
Why we put our bathroom heaters through the “damp-heat” wringer
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and constant humidity. It’s basically a sauna for your ceiling fixtures. If an infrared lamp isn’t built specifically for this, things go south quickly. Seals leak, quartz tubes crack, or the wiring just rots away. We don’t like guessing games. That’s why we use damp-heat aging tests. We basically try to break the heater in the lab so it doesn’t break in your home.
The battle against steam
Water vapor is a sneaky thing. It finds every tiny gap in the housing and heads straight for the connection points between the lamp and the socket. Once it gets in, you get oxidation. That creates resistance, which leads to hotspots. And hotspots lead to melted wires or a lamp that just gives up the ghost way too early. To stop this, we blast our units with cycles of extreme heat and humidity. We’re looking for any sign of electrical leakage. If the insulation can’t handle the pressure, the whole batch gets tossed. Simple as that.
Thermal shock is real
Think about it. You’ve got a cold lamp that suddenly jumps to over 500°C while surrounded by damp air. That’s a massive shock to the system. If the glass isn’t right, you get micro-fractures. Our tests simulate years of clicking that switch on and off in a wet room. We check if the seals are still gripping the tube tightly. Because the second a seal loosens, moisture hits the tungsten filament—and that kills the lamp instantly.
Finding the “sweet spot”
Here’s the tricky part: you can’t just seal everything in plastic and call it a day. If we make the housing completely airtight to keep the steam out, the internal electronics will basically cook themselves. It’s a balancing act. We spend a lot of time tweaking the ventilation paths. We want a lamp that’s tight enough to ignore the steam, but open enough to breathe. That way, you get a heater that actually lasts without short-circuiting the first time you take a long, hot shower.
