
Getting the Heat Right: Our Take on Fast-Start IR Lamps
When you’re running high-speed PET production, you don’t have time to wait around. The window to heat that preform is tiny. If your lamps aren’t hitting the right temperature the second they’re needed, you end up with cold spots in the PET wall. It’s a headache no one wants. That’s why we built our replacement lamps specifically for Sidel SBO 10 and SACMI rotary systems. They’re designed to handle the brutal cycling these machines put them through. It’s all about that ramp-up. We spent a lot of time messing with the filament composition and gas fill because we wanted to kill the lag. We wanted the gap between “power on” and “peak heat” to be as short as possible. When the lamp starts fast, you don’t have to crank up the oven temperature just to compensate. And we all know what happens when you do that—you get scorched preforms. We also keep the wattage tolerances incredibly tight. Why? Because if the wattage drifts, your heat distribution shifts. Then you’re stuck spending your entire afternoon tuning the machine instead of actually producing bottles. Built for the real world These are simple drop-in replacements. No fuss. We use high-purity quartz so the tubes don’t warp when things get intense during a full production run. Even the connectors are beefed up. We know these get swapped out often, so we made sure the pins align perfectly with the SBO 10 housing. No loose fits, no arcing—just a solid connection. A quick word of advice Here’s the thing: pushing a lot of energy into a short window puts a lot of stress on the quartz. It’s a trade-off. To make these lamps last, you’ve got to keep your reflectors clean. If they’re pitted or oxidized, the IR heat just bounces off and misses the preform. The temptation then is to just crank up the voltage to make up for it. Don’t do that. You’ll just burn out the filament early. Keep the optics sparkling, and the tubes will actually last.
