
Stop the Burn-Out: Dealing with Preform Tube Breakage in SIG Blomax Lines
If you’re running SIG Blomax lines, you know the headache of tube burn-outs. It’s frustrating. Usually, it comes down to two things: structural stress or those annoying voltage spikes that happen while you’re trying to soften PC preforms. We got tired of seeing these fail, so we rebuilt our replacement lamps to actually hold up. Getting the heat right PC preforms are picky. If the heat isn’t perfectly even, you’re in trouble. We designed our lamps with a tighter tolerance on the heating element’s diameter. Why? Because it bumps up the heat density. You get the temperature you need to soften the plastic without having to push your power supply to the limit. One quick tip: keep your cooling fans clean. These high-density lamps put out a lot of heat. If your airflow is blocked, that heat stays in the oven housing and starts cooking your sockets. Not a good look. Built to stay straight Standard tubes have a habit of bowing when they get hot. Once they warp, the electrodes lose contact, and that’s when the lamp dies. We swapped the standard glass for heavy-wall quartz. It stays straight. No bowing, no warping. We also use a high-grade halogen fill. This keeps the light steady over time. Most people notice their lamps dimming, so they naturally crank up the voltage to compensate. That’s a trap—it just kills the lamp faster. Our lamps just stay bright. Putting them to work The best part? These are drop-in replacements. You don’t have to touch your wiring or mess with your racks. We also beefed up the electrode welds so the lamps don’t just pop out when the machine starts vibrating. There is one small thing to keep in mind. Because the walls are thicker, the infrared light hits a little differently. You might need to nudge your heating timers by a few milliseconds to get the softening point exactly where you want it for your specific resin. It’s a quick tweak, and once it’s set, you can finally stop worrying about the next burn-out.
