
Why we put our IP44 heaters through “the torture chamber”
Bathrooms are basically a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and the occasional stray splash of water. If an infrared heater isn’t built specifically for that chaos, the insides will start to rot or short out before you even finish your first year of ownership. Now, we use IP44-rated housings to keep the dust and splashes out. But here’s the thing: a rubber seal isn’t the only thing that can fail.
The “breathing” problem
Water vapor is sneaky. It finds a way in. Think about it—every time you flip the heater on and off, the air inside the unit heats up and expands, then cools down and shrinks. It’s almost like the heater is breathing. And every time it “inhales,” it pulls a little bit of that moist bathroom air right into the chassis. Once that moisture is inside, it settles on the electrical contacts and the glass supports. That’s where things get dicey. To stop this, we run every batch through damp-heat aging tests. We lock the units in a chamber that’s hot and humid for days on end. We aren’t just checking if they turn on. We’re looking for the slow stuff—oxidation on the wires or insulation that starts to give way. If a unit shows even a hint of wear, it’s out.
Fighting the heat gradient
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot, very fast. This creates a weird situation where the lamp is scorching, but the rest of the waterproof housing is relatively cool. That temperature gap can actually cause condensation to form right on the circuit board or the terminal blocks. It’s like a cold soda can on a summer day. If you buy a heater that hasn’t been aged and tested, you’re gambling with “burn out” at the connection points. We make sure our seals can handle expanding and contracting a thousand times without letting the moisture win.
The balancing act
IP44 is a great start, but it doesn’t make a heater airtight. And honestly? You don’t want it airtight. If we seal it too tight, the heat gets trapped inside and fries the driver. But if it’s too loose, the steam crawls in. It’s a delicate balance. Our aging tests are the only way we know exactly where that sweet spot is, so your heater actually lasts.
