When you’re picking out ceiling infrared heaters, the temptation is to just go for the biggest wattage you can find. But here’s the thing: bigger isn’t always better. It’s really about how the heat hits you based on how big your room is and how high your ceilings go. If you get it wrong, you’re either wasting money on electricity or shivering in a cold spot.
The Deal with Ceiling Height
Physics is a bit annoying here. Infrared heat drops off fast as you move away from the lamp. If you’ve got a standard 2.4m ceiling, a 250W to 400W lamp usually does the trick for a small shower area. But if you’re dealing with a fancy high-ceiling bath or a big commercial space, you’ll need more power—or more lamps—to actually feel that warmth on your skin. I see installers make this mistake all the time: they put one massive, high-wattage lamp in a big room. The result? You get a scorching “hot spot” right under the light, while the rest of the room feels like a freezer. It’s much better to spread the load. Use a few lower-wattage units instead. You’ll get a nice, even glow across the whole space.
Picking Your Power (Without Tripping the Breaker)
You want enough heat to feel cozy, but not so much that you’re popping breakers or watching your power bill skyrocket. For a tiny bathroom (under 4m²), one 250W-500W unit is plenty. If you’re in the medium range (4-8m²), a pair of 400W lamps usually covers the area better. For the really big spaces or those towering ceilings (over 8m²), you’re looking at arrays of 600W+ lamps. Just a heads-up: more wattage means more current. Make sure your wiring can actually handle the load. A Few Real-World Installation Tips
These lamps get seriously hot at the base. If you’re tucking the lamp into a tight plastic housing without any room to breathe, that heat has nowhere to go.
