Can New Infrared Radiators Actually Speed Up Your Old Blow Molders?
If you’re running some older blow molding machines, you know the feeling. You want more bottles per hour, but it feels like you’ve hit a wall. You start thinking the machine is just too old to push any harder. But here is the thing: usually, the mechanical parts aren’t the problem. It’s the heat. If your heating cycles are sluggish, you’re just wasting time. Swapping out those worn-down, low-spec lamps for high-density, Sidel-compatible radiators can actually move the needle on your daily output.
Let’s talk about heat density
We built these radiators to pump out a lot of short-wave infrared. When you put in a higher-wattage lamp, you’re basically hitting that PET preform with a much stronger wave of heat. The plastic hits its target temperature way faster. That means you can either speed up the machine or shorten the oven length. It’s a simple win. But, a quick heads-up. More power means more heat in the oven. If your cooling fans are clogged with dust or just too small for the job, you might overheat the frame or warp your reflectors. Just keep an eye on your ventilation.
The nitty-gritty on the gear
We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because these things go through a lot of thermal stress, and we don’t want them burning out on you. Most of our units use R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just slide right in. You won’t have to spend your weekend rewiring the entire control cabinet. The real secret, though, is the coating on the quartz. We’ve tweaked it so the heat actually sinks into the preform wall. You don’t want to just scorch the surface. That’s how you get “pearlescence” or a bottle that’s burnt on the outside but ice-cold at the base.
Getting them on the floor
Swapping these out is pretty painless. Pull the old tubes, give your reflectors a quick check for oxidation (clean them if they look dull), and plug in the new ones. One tip: check your amperage. Since you’re jumping up in wattage, you’re pulling more current. Just make sure your relays and wiring can handle the extra load so you aren’t tripping breakers every twenty minutes.
